We have low minimum quantities for yearbooks and can handle print runs into the thousands so you can print yearbooks specific to small clubs, community organizations, or teams, or for your entire school. Prize your school’s favorite moments of the past year and recognize your students with our custom yearbooks that offer outstanding quality with fast turnaround times.

Yearbook Cover and Binding Options

Thomas Group Printing offers a variety of cover and binding options for yearbooks. Soft cover yearbooks are best if you have up to 150 pages. You have various design and print options due to the smaller quantity of pages. You can choose varied sizes so you can make smaller or more square yearbooks if that fits your community organization or school better.

Hardcover yearbooks are best for larger yearbooks with more pages. You can add artwork or the school’s name to the spine to really create a book that lasts for your school or organization. Hardcovers are made from a board and can be up to 0.3” thick, and weigh as much as 160 pt. All the pages are cut, folded, and glued into the book and then attached to the cover with adhesive.

This enduring material will help you achieve the look and feel of a professional yearbook that makes an impact on your students, members, and staff.

We offer different binding options such as saddle-stitch or perfect binding to ensure your yearbook stands the test of time.

Saddle Stitched Binding for Yearbooks

Saddle-stitching is cost-effective and best for lower page counts. In fact, if your yearbook is under 32 pages, it’s the only option most printers will be able to provide for binding due to the nature of how pages attach to the spine of the book.

Each page is folded in half and nested so that once the pages are ready for binding, they can be stapled together through the fold of the yearbook. You are limited to between a few pages, and up to 64 pages for saddle-stitched yearbooks.

Perfect Binding for Yearbooks

Perfect binding is the most popular binding type for yearbooks. It’s a binding style that’s most similar to a book or high-end magazine with a spine in which pages are bound together using an adhesive to create a spine. The pages will line up perfectly and can lay flat. Due to the nature of the binding process, only yearbooks over 32 pages plus cover can use perfect binding.

Design Specifications and Finishing Options for Yearbooks

If you’d like color and images to extend all the way to the edge of the cover and inside pages for a professional look, your yearbook will need to use 0.125” bleed, including for the spine of the book. You can read more about how to properly set bleed in your file in this blog post. Additionally, Thomas Group Printing provides free starter files for printing yearbooks or any other style of book. Each of our starter files comes to set up with pre-set bleed and other important document settings to help you avoid common print design errors. We offer starter files for books in InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Canva.

Depending on the cover type you use we also offer a wide variety of finishing options if you’d like to achieve a high-end or unique look for your yearbook. These include:

  • Foil printing: Foil printing is a versatile finishing technique that gives projects a lustrous surface finish. Foil printing involves applying either metallic or colored foil to the surface of a printed project in order to enhance the overall appearance and add a creative, high-end element to printed projects.
  • Embossing/Debossing: Embossing creates raised designs, or lettering, on various kinds of paper stocks, for a stylish, tasteful design element. It adds texture and depth to a product and looks and feels even better on heavier papers, where the contrast is greater.

FAQ

Common Yearbook Printing questions

How is Page Count Determined?
Each side of a sheet counts as one page, so a book’s cover alone includes 4 pages: front cover, inside front cover, inside back cover, and back cover. Binding-Specific Page Counts: Saddle Stitch: Requires page counts divisible by 4. Perfect Binding & Wire-O: Requires page counts divisible by 2.
What’s the Maximum or Minimum Page Count?
The binding method you choose will influence the page count range: Saddle Stitching: Works best for projects between 8 and 60 pages, with page counts in multiples of 4. Perfect Binding: Suitable for 32 pages + cover and up, with page counts in multiples of 2. Spiral or Wire-O Binding: This option is flexible and can handle page counts from just a few pages up to 520 on thinner stock, with page counts in multiples of 2.
Can Perfect Bound Books Lay Flat?
Perfect bound books are not designed to lay flat when opened. Forcing them to do so can damage the spine and weaken the glue holding the pages together. To maintain the book’s quality and durability, avoid pressing it down.
Does Pricing Include Multiple Editions or Covers of a Book?
Pricing reflects the cost of one edition only per book. If you need additional editions or multiple covers, this requires a custom quote.
Does Pricing Include Hardcover and Landscape Books?
The listed pricing is for portrait orientation soft cover books only. If you’re interested in hardcover or landscape formats, please request a custom quote.
What is the Difference Between Coated and Uncoated Paper?
Coated paper has a smooth finish that visually sharpens images and enhances color. The coating can be glossy or semi-gloss, depending on the desired effect, but both options contribute to a polished, professional look. Uncoated paper has a natural, porous surface. It’s perfect for projects where readability and a tactile feel are priorities. It’s also a practical option for items that need to be written on, like letterheads or notepads.
Should I Choose Color or Black-and-White Printing for My Bound Product?
If your project includes color anywhere – even a single image or logo – it’s a 4-color (4C) job. Our standard pricing is designed for 4C printing, providing vibrant, professional results fast. Single-color (one-ink) printing is available by custom quote and may offer some cost savings, but 4C remains the most common option. If you’re unsure, we are happy to talk with you to determine the best options for your unique printing needs.
How Long Does it Take to Produce a Bound Product?
Once PDF proofs are approved, production can take approximately 3 days for saddle stitched publications and roughly 3-5 days for perfect bound, plus shipping. If you need a precise timeline, send us your project details, and we’ll set up a schedule that works for you.
How Can I Avoid Delays in Prepress and Design?
Before submitting your file, double-check that it’s set up correctly to prevent any prepress delays: Bright, high-resolution images (300 dpi) Files exported with crop marks and 1/8” bleed all around Files exported as single pages within one PDF
Is Shipping Really Free?
Yes! We’ll cover the cost to ship your order to a single location via ground delivery. If you need expedited shipping or drop shipping to multiple locations, additional fees will apply.
